Welcome to World Culture and Geography! In this class we will study people, places, and societies of the contemporary world.
Course Overview
In 6th Grade, students study societies from the following regions of the world: Europe, Russia and the Eurasian republics, North America, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Southwest Asia-North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Pacific realm. Students describe the influence of individuals and groups on historical and contemporary events in those societies and identify the locations and geographic characteristics of various societies. Students identify different ways of organizing economic and governmental systems. The concepts of limited and unlimited government are introduced, and students describe the nature of citizenship in various societies. Students compare institutions common to all societies such as government, education, and religious institutions. Students explain how the level of technology affects the development of the various societies and identify different points of view about events. The concept of frame of reference is introduced as an influence on an individual's point of view.
Grading System
Grades will be given in the following categories with the listed weight in each, as per district policy.

-
Remind – Will be used to communicate important information
-
Newsletter - Periodically, I will send a newsletter to share what is happening in our class
-
Google Classroom - Class resources, materials, and possible assignments will be available on the website
Classroom Procedures
In order to ensure students are able to have a safe and fun, learning environment, classroom procedures must be followed. I require all students to arrive to class on time each day with all necessary supplies. Students must always be ready and willing to listen and communicate (using school appropriate language) with me as well as their classmates. Also, students must always respect themselves, their classmates, and school property. Eyes should be on me while I make any important announcements. In order for students to get my attention, students will raise their hand and wait to be called on instead of speaking out during class.
Electronic Devices
My class relies heavily on the use of technology. Technology provides students with a fun and interactive way for students to learn. Students should bring their school-provided chromebooks to class every day. Mobile/personal devices are required to be kept in backpacks unless teacher permission is given for educational purposes.
Per teacher’s instruction personal devices may be allowed to listen to music when working independently. Students must keep one ear bud out at all times to be able to hear announcements. Music should be school appropriate and kept on a playlist, so as not to spend time searching for individual songs. Teacher reserves the right to amend this rule as necessary.
Food and Drink
Water bottles will be allowed in class at all times per the district policy. Food and/or gum will not be allowed in class. Students are expected to use the trash can to keep areas clean.

Discipline
For students who choose not to follow rules, cause disruptions, are disrespectful, or do not come prepared for class (either missing composition notebook/supplies/notes), will be subject to appropriate consequences.
All discipline matters will strictly follow the rules and procedures as outlined in the student handbook.
Academic Dishonesty
Following the student handbook, anyone involved in cheating on an assignment will receive a zero on that assignment and a referral. It is ok to give help or assistance, but it’s not ok to give answers.
Remote Learning
In the case of a shut down due to COVID-19, students will be asked to follow a lesson plan that will be set on the Edgenuity platform. Each student will have the opportunity to explore this platform before being asked to do any assignments remotely. They will also be asked to check for messages and/or assignments on Remind and Google Classroom. The initial transition will be as easy and as simple as possible.
