Welcome to 6th grade Leadworthy!  In this class we will develop critical, life-changing skills including taking personal responsibility, expressing ourselves well, and making good decisions when problems arise.

Course Overview

Leadworthy is a research-based curriculum designed to develop personal responsibility, leadership, and professional skills through explicit social-emotional participatory learning experiences. The course provides students the opportunity to develop an awareness of personal image, a healthy self-concept, and healthy relationships. Students learn the concepts of consequential thinking and principle-based decision making. Students examine their awareness of social media, the effects of peer pressure and bullying, along with effective strategies to counteract those effects. This course will provide students opportunities to improve their public speaking and communication skills and their personal vision, mission statement, and goals. They will develop an understanding of what it means to be an effective member of the community through community service.

Grading System

Grades will be given in the following categories with the listed weight in each, as per district policy.

Academic Achievement                60%

Academic Practice                 40%

Possible grades include projects (major and minor), occasional homework, daily work, essays, and speeches. Grading rubrics will be given and explained in detail upon the start of all projects.

Any work plagiarized will be subject to our Academic Dishonesty policy.

Please refer to the Jr/Sr High handbook for additional information regarding late work, makeup work, grade requirements and grade averaging.

Communication

Communication is very important. I will communicate to students and parents/guardians in various ways.

  • Class website – Class resources will be available on the website

  • Remind – Will be used to communicate important information

  • Newsletter - Periodically, I will send a newsletter to share what is happening in our class

  • Google Classroom - Class resources, materials, and possible assignments will be available on the website

Classroom Procedures

In order to ensure students are able to have a safe and fun, learning environment, classroom procedures must be followed. I require all students to arrive to class on time each day with all necessary supplies.  Students must always be ready and willing to listen and communicate (using school appropriate language) with me as well as their classmates. Also, students must always respect themselves, their classmates, and school property.  Eyes should be on me while I make any important announcements.  In order for students to get my attention, students will raise their hand and wait to be called on instead of speaking out during class.

Electronic Devices

My class relies heavily on the use of technology. Technology provides students with a fun and interactive way for students to learn. Students should have their school-provided chromebooks in class every day. Mobile/personal devices are required to be turned off and kept in backpacks.

Food and Drink

Water bottles will be allowed in class at all times per the district policy.  Food will not be allowed in class (this includes after an athletic period).  Students are expected to use the trash can to keep areas clean.

Supplies

  • Blue or black pens

  • Pencils

  • Composition notebook

  • Glue

  • Map pencils or markers

  • Scissors

The students composition notebook will be kept in class for creating their interactive notebook.

Wish List

  • Kleenex

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Paper towels

  • Glue sticks

  • Scissors

When the Teacher is Out

Students are expected to remain on task while the teacher is out of the room.  Rules and procedures will be followed as you continue to work.

Class Dismissal

The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell.  Students are responsible for organizing work online or placing in composition notebooks, desks should be arranged and all trash should be picked up, before exiting the classroom.

Discipline

For students who choose not to follow rules, cause disruptions, are disrespectful, or do not come prepared for class (either missing composition notebook/supplies/notes), will be subject to appropriate consequences.

All discipline matters will strictly follow the rules and procedures as outlined in the student handbook.

Academic Dishonesty

Following the student handbook, anyone involved in cheating on an assignment will receive a zero on that assignment and a referral. It is ok to give help or assistance, but it’s not ok to give answers.

Remote Learning

In the case of an extended school closure due to extenuating circumstances (COVID-19, etc) students will be asked to follow a lesson plan that will be set on the Edgenuity platform. Each student will have the opportunity to explore this platform before being asked to do any assignments remotely. They will also be asked to check for messages and/or assignments on Remind and Google Classroom. The initial transition will be as easy and as simple as possible.
